Philipp GALLE (Haarlem 1537 - Antwerp 1612) "The Triumph of Time" Original burin engraving from a subject by Martin van Heemskerk for the series of the Six Triumphs of Petrarch of which it is the No. 5. Beautiful copy in the first state, datable to 1565, printed with refined shades of gray, on a portion of thin laid paper bearing the "Aquila" watermark, defined by Briquet as typical of sixteenth-century paper production, with large margins beyond the imprint of the slab, with some slight traces of dirt, slight folds and small defects on the large white edges but overall in excellent general condition. The winged character sits high in a triumphal chariot pulled by a pair of deer and on whose wheels the hours are engraved, he supports himself with crutches, a symbol of transience, and is surrounded by symbols such as the sundial and the hourglass, in his passage it is destruction and change, accompanied by four beautiful characters representing the Seasons. Bibliography: Briquet “Les Filigranes” Leipzig 1923 vol.1 pag. 62. Hollstein "Dutch and Flemish Etchings, Engravings and Woodcuts" Amsterdam 1969-91 (Galle 393). Mori - Salsi "Representations of Destiny ... Bertarelli collection" Milan 2001 n ° 80. "The New Hollstein - Philips Galle" Rotterdam 2001 part.II n ° 297. Measurements in mm: 193 x 264
